Upsilon Chapter

  • Alpha Sig has a long and distinguished history at Penn State.  Upsilon Chapter was originally established as the Viking Club on November 25, 1912.  Five years later, on February 1, 1917, the Viking Club petitioned Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity for a charter.  One year later GJP Wayne M. Musgrave installed the men as the Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi on February 9, 1918.  At the time, the chapter house was located at 218 East Nittany Avenue.  Upsilon Chapter continued to grow and expand over the years as one of the many fraternities that established itself at Penn State.  In 1946, the Chapter grew significantly as Alpha Kappa Pi Fraternity merged into Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity nationally.  That year, Upsilon Chapter subsequently had two chapter houses with two sets of officers.  By November of 1947, Upsilon Chapter moved into what had been the Alpha Kappa Pi house at 328 East Fairmount Avenue and still resides there today.  Upsilon Chapter was not always the most prosperous fraternity at Penn State and it took the work of Brothers Paul Ilgen and Jack Augenbauch to save the chapter from near extinction in 1975.  The chapter began to grow again after that and in 1984 along with Sorority pair Alpha Sigma Alpha, raised the most money for the IFC Dance Marathon.  This began a twelve year run for Alpha Sig and ASA as the top money raising pair for THON.  Upsilon Chapter however hit hard times again its charter was revoked by Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity in 2000.  All was not lost however as Brother Michael Cocco worked to quickly recolonize Upsilon Chapter in 2001 and recruit new men to begin a new phase for the chapter.  Upsilon Chapter's charter was successfully reestablished in 2006 and is currently working to once again become one of the top fraternities at Penn State.
